learn to sew classes

Two different classes to choose from:

If you're a complete newbie or have some basic sewing skills but don't feel confident enough to tackle your own projects, we offer two learn to sew courses that will get you started. If you want to use a commercial pattern, Basic Dressmaking is for you. If you’re keen to design your own pattern, Introductory Pattern Making & Garment Construction will teach you this. In both courses, your first class will be an Orientation Session in which you’ll learn how to operate a sewing machine and overlocker to complete basic sewing tasks.

T

Dressmaking

If you want to start with a commercial pattern (the “big 4” are Vogue, Simplicity, McCalls and Butterick, but there are loads of amazing independent pattern makers including Papercut and Cashmerette), our Dressmaking For Beginners will get you started.

Pattern Making & Garment Construction

Starting from first principles, Introductory Pattern Making & Garment Construction will teach you how to draft simple patterns for your own body shape and measurements, together with the sewing techniques required to make them. It’s a blend of both sewing and pattern making to teach you how to sew your own clothes.

learn to sew | FAQs

+ How long does it take to learn to sew?

This is definitely an "it all depends" type question but you should plan of spending a few hours per week to not only learn the basic sewing techniques, but also to practice what you've learnt. Our classes are structured into 11 week terms and you can choose from 2.5 or 3.5 hour classes per week. In our experience, that's the minimum number of hours (plus some homework) for students to learn to sew a simple garment.

+ Can you teach yourself to sew?

Absolutely! We're big fans of YouTube and you can definitely learn a lot about sewing that way, especially if you're already an experienced sewer or are looking for a specialised sewing technique. If you're a complete beginner or you want to improve your skills, there's a lot to be said for joining a class. One of the unexpected benefits is that you get to see what other people are making and learn from them (as well as get design inspirations). If you don't have any sewing friends, it's great to spend time with kindred spirits and compare fabrics!

+ What are the most difficult parts of learning to sew?

Fitting, fitting and fitting! Even really experienced sewists struggle with this (it's really hard to fit a garment when you're wearing it). If you have a dress form that is EXACTLY your size, it's easier. We also teach a class on how to make a personalised dress form.

+ Will my clothes look home made"?

Not if we've got anything to do with it! There are a few key things that make all the difference - even with the simplest of garments. Choosing the right fabric for the right project. Ensuring that your garment fits you properly. Choosing the right finishing techniques. Take a look at a piece of clothing you already own. It's not rocket science! With a little guidance and instruction, you'll be able to make something you'll love to wear. That's a promise.

+ Will I save money sewing my own clothes?

It depends on what you want to sew. If you're thinking about "fast fashion" there are a handful of big players who have this market stiched up with their supply chains and cheap labour. If you're keen to make quality, stylish clothes that fit you properly, don't date and will last the distance, you will definitely save money. The real value though is creating something you love.

Our Learn to Sew Classes are for Everyone

Yes, we're a fashion college and design school, but we believe that everyone benefits from courses taught at the highest levels. Even if you just want to learn to make basic clothes, or alter clothes you already have for a perfect fit, learning the right way first makes a lot of sense. Our beginning students often tell us how much they learn (and how much they're inspired and motivated) by seeing other exciting projects taking shape around them.

Flexible Class Times, Small Classes

We offer a flexible timetable which allows you to choose a class a time that works for you. We run daytime and evening classes during week, as well as on Saturdays. Our classes generally have a maximum of eight students, so you'll have plenty of one-on-one time with an experienced sewing teacher.

We've Got Everything You Need

It helps to have your own machine, but if you don't, we have a range of machines for you to use in class. Learning to sew doesn't have to cost a fortune and the best part about learning from us is that you can try different equipment and tools and decide whether it's something you really need to buy for yourself. We also have threads, interfacings, linings and closures, so can complete your project in class. No excuses!

It's Fun to Sew With Others

Maybe you thought that sewing was a dying skill or a twentieth dark art ... well, it's alive and well and you'll be amazed at the range of talented and interesting people who sew. If you don't have anyone to enthuse with about fabrics and sewing, come join us.
